13,27 % growth in recreational craft registrations between January and August

During the months of July and August, the recreational boat market shows an average growth of 9,5 %, which together with the seasonal peak in June (28,9%) produces a positive balance for the current season with an average growth of 15,9% compared to the same period in 2013.

By the end of August this year, 3.516 recreational vessels have been registered in Spain, 412 more than in the same period last year.

The charter market is showing a continued growth with a 62,68% increase so far this year, with 340 registrations compared to the 209 between January and August last year.

In the total of the year so far, the registrations of all boat lengths grow, the above 16 meter category leading the pack with +47,83%. The boats up to 8 meters are the most sought after, with a market share of 90,13% and growth by 13,22%  from January to August this year.

The recreational craft market has been growing throughout the summer season, a situation the nautical sector has not experienced  since 2007.

The demand for recreational craft during the months of June, July and August 2014 reflect a seasonal trend with an above the average growth in June (28,9%), when the vessels bought in preparation for the season  in previous months (April and May) are registered. The months of July and August show a more moderate growth of 9,5% on the average.

This information comes from the Recreational Market Report January-April 2014, based on the information collected by the Directorate General of Merchant Navy and published by the Spanish Nautical Trade Association.

Statistics by categories

By boat lengths, the segment of vessels above 16 meters grow most, with 34 new registrations (47,83% more than in the same period last year. It is followed by the segment of 12-16 meters which increases the registrations by 26,56% with 81 registrations, 17 more than in the same period last year.

The boats up to 8 meters occupy the biggest market share with 3.169 new registrations (370 more than between January and August last year. Lastly, the boats between 8 and 12 meters grow by 6,42% with 232 registrations compared to the 218 in the same period last year.

By the type of vessels, the jet skis and inflatables are the segments that show the biggest growth in registrations between January and August 2014, a 54,85% in both cases and with the same amount of new registrations as well: 607 compared to the 392 registered in each category in the same period in 2013.

The semirigid inflatables are in the next position, with a growth of 30,57%: 709 registrations compared to the 543 in the same period last year. The sailing boats grow by 21,67%, with 219 registrations compared to the 180 in the same period last year.

Motor vessels, which maintain the biggest market share (42,55%), grow by 2,75% with 1.496 registrations compared to the 1.456 registrations in the same period last year.

The charter market continue with the comeback. Recreational yacht charter is a tendency that attracts an increasing number of users, as manifested in the results of this market between January and August this year: a 62,68% increase in vessels registered for charter compared to the same period last year.

In total, 340 vessels for charter have been registered in Spain during this period, compared to the 209 registered between January and August last year. The current nautical season was specially positive in the charter market, which showed an average growth of 116% during the months of June, July and August, compared to last season.

The boats up to 8 meters are the most sought after for charter activity, with a market share of 85% and 289 registrations, showing a growth of 60% between January and August this year.

Standing out is the growth of registrations in the above 16 meter category. With a smaller market share (4,41%) this category registers 15 vessels compared to the 6 registered in the same period last year.

By the type of boats for charter use, the motor boats grow by most: 320% with 21 registrations compared to the 5 between January and August 2013.

They are followed by jet skis which grow by 60%, and have the biggest number of registrations with 289 compared to the 181 in the same period last year. In third place, the sailing boats experience a growth by 31,82%, with 29 registrations compared to the 22 between January and August 2013.

By provinces, the Balearic Islands, Barcelona and Cadiz continue occupying the top positions in the recreational craft market. The Balearic Islands, with a market share of 14,65%, grow by 27,16% - 515 registrations up until August this year, compared to the 405 in the same period last year.

Barcelona comes in the second place, with an 11,75% market share and a growth of registrations by 29,47%
- 413 between January and August 2014, compared to the 319 in the same period last year.

Cadiz continues in the third place, with a 7,85% market share and a growth by 35,96% - 276 between January and August 2014 compared to the 203 in the same period in 2013.
