Letter from the president - February 2015

I would like to take the opportunity to invite all our associates to participate in the Annual General Meeting of AENIB, which will take place on the 19th of February at the headquarters of CAEB in Palma. It is a very important event for the association  as we can take stock of the past year and between all of us decide the direction for the future. On the other hand, the statistics relating to the vessel registrations provided by ANEN highlight the promising outlook of the nautical sector on our islands. We have taken over Barcelona as the region with the biggest market share in recreational yachting. We are also witnessing a worrying tendency by the local government to sanction irregularities at sea.

In a few weeks the Annual General Meeting will take place at CAEB. It is an event of an utmost importance, where our management will be held to account and where we will decide together where we are headed as a sector and as businesses. Therefore your assistance is very important. As tradition mandates, prior to the Assembly we will organise a series of talks relating to the current state of the nautical sector. We are still finalizing the programme, but can tell you already that the general secretary of ANEN, Carlos Sanlorenzo will explain the latest legal and fiscal changes that have taken place in the recreational nautical sector, and give a hint of the challenged that are to be expected. There will be a chance for networking too, while having a glass of wine and catching up with fellows associates and speakers. As we get confirmations from other speakers, we will publish them in our forums in social networks  and through e-mails. We sincerely hope that you will be able to join us!

The Balearic government is preparing a set of rules to sanction irregularities in nautical, maritime and underwater activities, in order not to leave infractions unpunished as a consecuence of the scattered normative currently in vigour. At AENIB we believe that if all the different normatives will be unified in one single text and all the particularities of our islands are taken into account, the initiative could be acceptable. However, we fear that these regulations will be written one-sidedly and in a hurry (the regional elections will take place in a few months), without prior meetings with the companies of the sector and users´ associations. There is a risk of creating more legal uncertainty and even causing alarm among the tourists (let´s not forget the alarm that was caused by the normative for anchoring in the posidonia seagrass). To formulate rules of this type, that will affect a sector as extensive and powerful as ours should be done  with time and and taking all parties into account.

In case these regulations are approved without the necessary consensus, we would run a risk of endangering the budding growth in our community. According to the latest official information provided by ANEN, the Balearic Islands already are the market leaders when it comes to the number of recreational boat registrations, ahead of Barcelona. These statistics predict an interesting season for us. All the hard work during several years to update our legislation and to unify it with Europe, can not be thown away.

The III Nautical Congress, organised by ANEN, will take place in Barcelona between 11.-12th of March. The past two editions have shown the importance of this event, as it became a meeting point for various business sectors, public administration and the nautical sector. During the congress numerous talks will be given, discussion groups and workshops will be organised in order to get up to date with everything related to our business. If you are interested in participating, please don´t hesitate in getting in touch with us through the usual channels.

To conclude, I would like to encourage you again to participate in the Annual General Meeting of AENIB, to show our strength in unity and to decide our direction in the future.
