President's Letter - July 2012

Dear partners,

Behind us is a pretty busy June and it is not yet high season. Today, as well as the heat, has not given us respite. This past month much has been happening, news about the moorings on seagrass meadows and the question of whether also charge for anchoring on sand (an outbreak of controversy quickly faded, as the whole sector to be positioned against) . Also this month is marked by the words of the president Bauza at the opening of the conference "The Future of superyachts", who said Madrid would lead to the proposal to eliminate the matriculation tax on charter boats.

It is good to start with what we believe is great news: that the regional president of our community to become engaged in public to fight a tax against which we fought so long. The news appeared on the "Future of the Superyacht VII Conference" in Palma. The president of the Government said about the problems of the marine industry in the Balearic Islands and Madrid announced that it would eliminate the proposed registration tax to charter boats, a tax that leaves us at a disadvantage against other competitors around us having more to offer. To say that this is a clear case of unfairness, and that neither the charter of aircraft or car rental this tax applies. Since we value AENB thus we expect to be treated in the same way and to eliminate this tax as quickly as possible for the sake of the Balearic economy and companies, because we will never tire of saying: this tax deters tourists and we lose much more money than it collects.
The VII Future of the Superyacht Conference and Superyacht Cup are events in the Balearics we should feel proud to host. They give us prestige, and for a few days meets many of the most important of the world for big boats and is referred to additional supply bringing a lot of money. A clear example of what the nautical tourism can offer.

Much has been made this past month on the moorings on the Balearic Islands, with varying success. After several days have been organized to address the issue, first in the Club Diario de Mallorca and yesterday in the Chamber of Commerce, one can reach several conclusions. First, the willingness of all parties involved in the anchorage remain free. A second point is to note that the moorings are not a serious threat to Posidonia oceanica. As in the day yesterday it was found in the exhibitions of the very skilled in the art that discharges take place from the ground are the main causes of the destruction of this valuable resource and water heating. Also, using aerial photos, it became clear that only a fraction of the sailors drop anchor on seagrass and is mostly due to ignorance rather than malice. That is why from the very Government that said its action would focus on informing, training and awareness both foreign visitors and local users themselves of vital importance to our environment, the preservation of this marine plant. The various representatives of the Government (including the Minister of Environment, the Director General of Ports and Airports, and the Director General of Environment) said specifically that the moorings on sand would remain free as before, a statement with which AENB is completely agree. The minister Company told those present that regulates anchoring on Posidonia precisely to allow the installation of green buoys on it and the funding, since state law do not preclude not only fund but also the removal of the remains of the beaches.

From AENB believe it has been very positive reaction of the Government after the subsequent controversy and confusion that was generated after be released the draft decree. From the outset we note that caused the anxiety and hire internationally, along with AEGY, editing a video explaining to reassure and inform potential visitors. That is why we would ask the Government inform not only the tourists who come but they did also in the home countries to uproot any questions you may have.

Spanish sailing is mourning the death of Don Marcial Sanchéz Barcaiztegui, Admiral of the Navy. He was a person greatly respected here in the Balearics. Those who have had the good fortune to know, feel deeply the loss of a great man, totally committed to sailing and above all a gentleman.

I can not conclude this letter without also sending our deepest condolences to the family and friends of our secretary, Juan Rossello, who died recently. It was a very loved by all and spent many years fighting for the sector along with all of us. He will be greatly missed and remain forever in our memories.
